Course Description:
The course is designed to help students develop their abilities to read critically and analytically. Through the close reading of a text, students will begin to understand the role that language plays in providing both meaning and pleasure; they should also recognize the importance of the relationship between form and content.

Students will be expected to respond to the text through thoughtful discussion and writing on three levels: emotional, interpretive, evaluative. The discussions and writing assignments are vital components of the course since they will reinforce the reading of a text.

In addition to the reading, writing, and discussions, the course will include the study of literary devices and vocabulary.

Course Policies:
Students should be prepared for class at all times.

Absence from class prior to an assignment/test does not excuse the student from completing the assignment or from taking the test on the designated day. In cases of prolonged absence, special arrangements will be made to help the student meet assignment deadlines.

Assessment:
The quarter grade is an average of quizzes, tests, and essays.
