     Vol. X.  No. 2 – October 2007

“GUIDANCE HAPPENINGS”

  -Applications are now available for the PA Governor’s Schools of Excellence.  Each “school” is a 5-week long summer program for current sophomores and/or juniors, taking place on college campuses across the state.  The schools are:  Agricultural Sciences, Arts, and Global Entrepreneurship for 10th or 11th graders; Health Care, Information Technology, International Studies, Sciences, and Teaching for 11th graders only.  Application deadline – varies

 

  -PSAT testing for registered students will take place on Saturday, Oct. 20th in the cafeteria, 8:00 a.m. to approximately 11:30 a.m.  Students should bring at least 2 pencils with erasers and a calculator and arrive by 7:45 a.m!!!!! 

 

  -Mark your calendar for Tuesday, October 9th!!!! Plan on attending the Annual College Fair at Northampton Community College from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.  The list of colleges attending the fair is available in the guidance office.

  -Mark your calendar for Wednesday, October 17th!!!! Plan on attending the Annual College Night at LCCC from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.  Over 100 colleges and universities will be represented.

  -Mark your calendar for Sunday, November 4th!!!! Plan on attending the Philadelphia National College Fair at the PA Convention Center from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.  The list of colleges attending the fair is available in the guidance office.

-Are you interested in teaching children and considering a career as a Paraeducator?  LCCC offers a two year program designed to train students for positions as paraeducators within the field of special education.  Field experiences and observations are incorporated into the program.  Stop in the guidance office for further details.

 
    SCHOLARSHIPS/ETC:

-Prudential Spirit of Community Award - Are you an outstanding youth volunteer?  If you have engaged in volunteer activities that occurred at least in part after 9/1/05, check in the guidance office for application details.  Deadline – 10/31/06.

    -Discover Colleges provides a FREE private college information service as well as a $2500 private college scholarship drawing.  Log onto www.discovercolleges.com to request information and automatically be entered in the $2500 scholarship drawing.

    -The Horatio Alger Association is sponsoring a Scholarship ProgramCritical financial need is part of the criteria.  Deadline – October 30th.

    -Coca-Cola sponsors the Scholars Foundation Scholarship Program for seniors.  You must apply online at: 

    www.coca-colascholars.org.  Deadline – October 31st.

    -PENCON Foundation sponsors a scholarship for seniors involved in a Science related or Environmental Project.  Letter of intent to apply is due by November 16, 2007.
