6th Grade Studies
Major Subjects
ENGLISH- Students will study grammar usage, vocabulary and assorted writing styles while learning about literature and poetry. Students will develop oral and written communication skills.
SOCIAL STUDIES- Students will engage in an in-depth study of ancient civilizations and empires
ENRICHED MATHEMATICS- Students will study fractions, percentage, decimals, geometry, probability and statistics.
Or
MATHEMATICS- students will study Numeration and Place Value, Operations with Whole Numbers, Measurements, Fractions, Decimals, Percentage, Graphs/Tables, Sets and Geometry.
SCIENCE- students will investigate an integrated life, earth and physical science curriculum designed to meet new state standards in the areas of science and technology as well as environment and ecology.
READING- This program allows students to be exposed to highly motivating stories at controlled reading levels as well as offers structured programs for skill development. Students have an opportunity to explore a variety of genres including mystery, adventure, historical fiction, biography, science fiction and fantasy while completing alternate assessments.
Special Subjects
ART-
four major areas are studied: aesthetics, criticism, studio and history (Egyptian Culture, Medieval, Romanesque and Gothic). Students will take a field trip to the Allentown Art Museum.COMPUTERS- Keyboarding techniques are taught in the context of learning the basics of word processing. Students apply knowledge to complete class assignments.
FAMILY AND CONSUMER SCIENCE- INDEPENDENT LIVING: focuses on Discovering You, Decision-making and problem solving, and interaction skills.
GUIDANCE- students explore units of instruction that include study skills, career awareness, decision-making, problem-solving, and interaction skills.
LIBRARY- This class is designed to give students information retrieval skills that will allow them to integrate this knowledge into other subject areas.
MUSIC- Students explore the basics of music such as notes, rests and their values as well as other musical symbols along with a study of all types of instruments.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION- Students participate in team, individual sports as well as lead-up games are offered in a coeducational environment.
TECH CORE-
This class is an introduction to the five major areas of Technology Education using hands-n activities with computer support. Manufacturing, Construction, Communication Transportation and Bio-Related.
