What is IST?

The Instructional Support Team (IST) provides a process intended to maximize individual student success in the regular classroom, while at the same time serving as a screening process for students who may be in need of special services.

IST Goals

· To identify students who are at risk of academic failure.

· To help students develop skills to be successful.

· To encourage students to take responsibility for their own learning and behavior.

· To help students reach their full learning potential.

· To assist teachers in developing and using techniques and adaptations for improved learning.

· To help parents take an active role in their child's education.

The Process

1. A referral to IST is made by the teacher, parent or student.

2. The Instructional Support Team:

  • Reviews student records
  • Observes and meets with the student.
  • Conducts informal assessments.

3. An Action Plan meeting is held.

  • The problem is identified.
  • Goals are set.
  • Possible solutions are suggested.
  • An action plan is written that includes strategies for helping the student, parents and teachers meet the student's goals.

4. The action plan is implemented for six 6-day cycles.

  • Student progress is monitored
  • Changes to the plan are made as needed.
  • The success of the plan is evaluated
