Video has quickly become a popular media through which students express themselves. This rise in video creation and consumption has led to such sites as YouTube and Google Video. But if you've ever looked for school suitable videos on either of these sites, you'll quickly understand why we wouldn't want to send our students to these sites. Enter TeacherTube.
TeacherTube is a fairly new site on the web that focuses on "homegrown" video for education. The site provides access to amatuer video clips tagged and organized into various content areas such as on the Channels page. Since the web is not just about consuming information, but creating and contributing information, video can also be uploaded at the TeacherTube site.
I started out on the Top Favorites page and found some videos that were thought provoking, instructional, and even humorous. I haven't spent a great deal of time looking around TeacherTube yet, but I found the content in School Design: Be the change... to be the most engaging. There is so much we need to think about differently in the 21st century, even our learning environements.
So for video, keep using UnitedStreaming for professional, top-quality clips. But you and your students may also want to look into TeacherTube if you are looking for clips from other students or have students that would like to submit their own work for others to see and use. Always remember to seek student and parent permission first!
