Language Arts:

Reading:

Reading is divided into three areas:  Shared Reading using the Houghton Mifflin Basal and selected trade books, Guided Reading using the Rigby Series, and Independent Reading.

Writing:

Writing is done throughout the curriculum as well as in Writer's Workshop.  Our writing focuses on tasks including fiction, thank you notes, poetry, retelling, and summarizing.

Students are encouraged to spell introduced spelling words correctly when writing.  Language mechanics such as capitalization, punctuation, and sentence structure will be incorporated.

Spelling:

Spelling units last two weeks.  Spelling tests will be given every other Thursday in sentence dictation form.  Tests will be cumulative.

Mathematics:

Children will be taught patterns and numbers, addition and subtraction facts through 20, addition and subtraction of two and three digit numbers, place value through 1,000, calendar, time, money, geometry, fractions, and beginning multiplication.

Problem Solving is a daily component of the second grade math program.  Problem solving strategies covered include:  act it out, choose the equation, guess and check, use manipulatives, draw a picture, find a pattern, and make a table.

The children will also be doing a mad minute each day to practice math facts.
